Southwest launches compensation program

The US's Southwest Airlines has launched a voucher-based compensation program covering previous flight delays as part of a US$140 million US Department of Transportation (DoT) settlement for problems in December 2022.

It is providing US$90 million in travel vouchers of US$75 or more over three years for passengers who suffered at least three hours' delays getting to their final destinations.

The program launched April 16 and it says a few thousand customers have applied since then.

Southwest ceo Bob Jordan said given its poor operational performance at the busy 2022 Xmas period, US$30 million in vouchers annually was "the right number" to commit to.

Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg said last month that Southwest will "really lead the market and it will be very interesting to see how other airlines respond – not as punishment but by way of competition".
