American steps up the fight for JAL

USA carrier and Japan Airlines’ suitor American Airlines has warned the Japanese airline it faces "enormous risks" if it joins the SkyTeam Alliance.

American’s vice president Asia Pacific Theo Panagiotoulias said JAL’s oneworld alliance currently was providing it US$500 million in annual revenue and it would pay more if both airlines acquired antitrust immunity after the conclusion of open skies talks between Japan and the United States.

"There is very minimal risk in staying with oneworld as opposed to joining (Delta’s) SkyTeam, which delivers enormous risks," he said.

"This is not a war between two carriers over JAL" he said, adding: "This is the right choice for JAL's future."
