BAA dumps runway plans

UK airports operator BAA has withdrawn its planning application for a third runway at London's Heathrow Airport and also withdrawn its plans for a second runway at Stansted Airport.

The move was a formality, since both the Conservative and Liberal Democrats - now in government - had opposed new runways.

BAA says it still will honour its pledge to buy up some homes on sites where the runways were set to be built.
