CAA lifts ash limits

The UK's Civil Aviation Authority has introduced new limits that will allow planes to fly through double the previous amount of volcanic ash - provided they have the agreement of airline and engine manufacturers.

Experts said the new concentration of ash was equivalent to two grains of sand in a bath tub.

Airline Flybe is the first to get consent to fly under the terms of the agreement. Chief executive Jim French said: "The application of these new rules in the last 48 hours would have reduced our levels of cancellation from 380 flights to 21."
