South African airport security challenged

South African journalists say they have smuggled dangerous items onto domestic flights in the country ahead of the World Cup next month.

One reporter was quoted by the BBC saying items smuggled on board the planes included knives, syringes, screwdrivers and razors.

However, Solomon Makgale of the Airports Company Security of South Africa countered that airport security in the country was "highly regulated" and new X-ray machines and metal detectors had been bought to improve security.
