Airbus and Boeing get into the Spirit

Spirit provides the fuselage for Boeing's 737 MAX series and some of its B787 and Airbus is its second-biggest customer, accounting for about 20 per cent of its revenues.

Both Boeing and Airbus need to untangle their current ties with Spirit, but separating Spirit's Airbus business has been guesstimated at costing US$1 billion or so.

At some stage, Boeing will want to ramp up its MAX production (currently capped by US authorities).

Airbus ceo Guillaume Faury has said Airbus 'could' assume control of Spirit's money-losing Belfast plant and its Kinston, North Carolina, USA plant where part of the A350 is made, if an agreement can be reached.

Unions are involved, too. Spirit is Northern Ireland’s largest manufacturing employer with 3,400 staff.
