Study finds top airlines 'can still be competitive on price'

A Which? study has confirmed what many in the travel industry already know: Legacy carrier fares that include baggage allowances, meals and some drinks can be cheaper than their budget competitors' base fares plus add-ons.

Analysis of return fares on three European routes found that with a cabin bag and seat selection included, British Airways beat even Wizz Air on return flights from London to Malaga, with a fare up to GBP96 cheaper.

While budget airlines often had the cheapest headline fares, once the cost of a cabin bag and seat selection were added, Ryanair and Wizz Air failed to be cheapest on any of the routes.

Baggage and seat selection fees made up 49 per cent of the total ticket price with Wizz Air when averaged across the three routes, 27 per cent with easyJet and 20 per cent on Ryanair.
