Greece offers free holidays

Nine months after wildfires burned on the island of Rhodes, Greece is offering free holidays to the 25,000 or so tourists who had to flee the island.

Under the scheme, people who were evacuated from hotels because of the July fires will be able to redeem e-vouchers worth up to EUR500 to cover accommodation for a week-long stay. The initiative will be run in two phases between now and 31 May and then 1 October to 15 November.

Tourism officials in Rhodes say more than 5,000 holidaymakers already have applied.

The actual compensation reflects the amount clients originally paid to tour operators and applies only to hotels, not private accommodation such as Airbnb rentals.
