Heathrow calls for end to GBP10 transit fee

London's Heathrow Airport has asked the government to scrap a new GBP10 charge for overseas travellers using UK airports to connect to other flights.

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) resembles the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (Esta) system.

It applies to direct flights from the country and also for transit passengers who use UK airports for more than two hours to connect to other flights.

Heathrow "supports the overall rationale behind the ETA", but says transiting passengers should be exempted because it discourages them.

It said: "Many long-haul routes that are important to the UK’s economy, exports and wider connectivity, rely on transit passengers. With more connecting passengers expected to choose other hubs as the scheme expands, ministers need to take action to remove this measure.”
