Boeing, Airbus in talks to split Spirit

US plane maker Boeing and its European rival Airbus could split the ownership of aviation parts provider Spirit AeroSystems to help them manage the supply chain and production quality issues that are impacting them.

Spirit supplies parts to both airframe manufacturers and other companies.

In an attempt to take back control of its well-publicised supply chain and to iron out production quality issues, Boeing earlier said it wanted to purchase Spirit, but a change of Spirit's ownership would not be simple.

Spirit’s Wichita plant in Kansas, USA supplies parts for the B737 MAX and B787s, so it will go to Boeing, no matter what the outcome of the discussions.

Spirit’s Airbus business is worth nearly 20 per cent of its revenues and Airbus wants Spirit’s factory in North Carolina, which works on the central section of the A350 aircraft, and the A220 wings factory in Belfast, Northern Ireland at the least.
