Qatar Air buys another five per cent of IAG

Airline group IAG has seen its biggest shareholder Qatar Airways raise its shareholding from around 10 per cent to just over 15 per cent - and it may go higher.

"Qatar Airways may consider increasing its stake further over time within the allowable 49 per cent limit," the Doha-based carrier said. (Under European Union rules, foreign investors can hold no more than 49 per cent of a European carrier.)

The latest increase in Qatar's IAG holding is valued at around GBP518 million.

IAG was born out of the merger of British Airways and Spain's Iberia and now also includes Spanish discount carrier Vueling and Ireland's Aer Lingus. It is based in Madrid.
